The Big Island’s Dangerous Roadways
The Galiher law firm is proud to represent the residents of the Big Island in personal injury cases. Unfortunately, there are too many preventable traffic fatalities and serious accidents on the Big Island’s long, primarily single lane highways. In 2010, there were 24 traffic fatalities on Big Island roads, and in 2009, there were 21 deaths. A large majority of Big Island traffic fatalities and injuries are the result of negligent and reckless vehicular operation, including drunk driving. Hawai`i County police statistics for 2010 reveal 1,260 major accidents. In 2009, there were 1,418 major traffic accidents on the island. Unsuspecting bicyclists and pedestrians were often victimized.
The Hawai`i Belt Road and Saddle Road
Big Island residents and visitors often travel on the three state highway routes which form a circle around the Big Island. Routes 11, 19, and 190 are often called the “Hawai`i Belt”.” The Hawai`i Belt includes and runs parallel with the historic Mamalahoa Highway. Residents and visitors also routinely traverse the recently upgraded Ala Mauna Saddle Road, which provides stunning views of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.
Our Win in the Mamalahoa Highway Case
Galiher DeRobertis Waxman represented the family of a young boy who was tragically killed as a passenger in a car driving on the Mamalahoa Highway. The section of the highway in which the child died was improperly and dangerously designed. We prevailed in the hard-fought lawsuit against the state for its improper and dangerous highway design. Our veteran attorneys and knowledgeable staff, in consultation with national highway safety experts, helped this boy’s family obtain maximum settlement for a preventable highway death. Additionally, the Galiher law firm successfully handled four other personal injury cases involving accidents which occurred at the same location on this defectively designed highway.
