What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare and relentless cancer.  It is estimated that 2500 – 3000 persons in the United States are diagnosed each year with mesothelioma.  Regrettably, this type of cancer is considered terminal.  Currently there is no cure for the disease.  This cancer attacks the mesothelium, which is the protective lining that surrounds the lungs, abdomen, and heart.  The mesothelium lining is a thin layer of protective tissue that lubricates and protects our internal organs.  It is essential for the lungs, heart and abdomen to function properly because it allows these organs to move easily inside our bodies.  When one contracts mesothelioma, the aggressive tumor spreads widely and causes the body’s mesothelial cells to become malignant.  The most common symptom of mesothelioma is shortness of breath.

How is Mesothelioma Caused?

Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos to exposure.  In most cases, a mesothelioma victim has a history of occupational exposure to asbestos.  What this means is that the person had a job where he or she worked with or around asbestos-containing products.  Unfortunately, in some cases, the loved ones of individuals who worked around asbestos-containing products have also been afflicted with the cancer.  This is typically referred to as household exposure.

When asbestos dust becomes airborne, microscopic asbestos fibers are inhaled by those nearby.  When the asbestos fibers are inhaled into the body, the tiny fibers become lodged in the tissue of the lungs.  These fibers act as a highly toxic carcinogen.  Mesotheliomas can take decades to develop after the original exposure to asbestos.  This is known as a latency period.  As a result of the disease’s long dormancy, it is 20 – 60 years after a person’s exposure that the cancer occurs.

Our Unique Knowledge

We created our Mesothelioma Knowledge Center to share with you the information we have gained representing mesothelioma families for over 35 years. In many respects, our documents and knowledge are unique. Gary Galiher filed one of the very first mesothelioma cases in the country in 1978. He and his attorneys then traveled the country deposing corporate representatives of asbestos companies as  witnesses and learning about the hazards of asbestos that had caused his client’s disease.

The Galiher law firm has continued to represent mesothelioma families ever since, investigating where and how each client was exposed to asbestos. As a result, our firm now has one of the largest collections of company documents, as well as a unique data base of where asbestos products were used. Our unique database helps us work with our clients to identify the companies at fault in their case.

This site came into being through our collaboration with leading doctors who specialize in mesothelioma and are knowledgeable  the complex issues related to its diagnosis and treatment. We have an extensive library of medical texts, articles, journals, and books concerning mesothelioma – from its causes to diagnostic techniques to treatment protocols and clinical trials. We even have some original copies of landmark books detailing the hazards of asbestos.

We also have collected hundreds of thousands of pages of documents from the US Naval Archives and other historical records centers that contain vital information about the asbestos exposure of naval seamen and ship yard workers. As a result, we have our own unique library of historical ship-related documents showing the use of asbestos on Navy ships. We are proud to have this valuable resource at our disposal to effectively represent Navy veterans and shipyard workers in asbestos cases.

There is much more information in or Knowledge Center. We urge you to read the article and learn more for yourself about this disease and treatment. We trust that you will find our Mesothelioma Knowledge Center a valuable resource.

Legal Claims Against Asbestos Companies

Because the companies that sold these asbestos products failed to warn the workers of the dangers, mesothelioma victims may have legal claims against them to recover the damages they have suffered. It is important not to delay in contacting a lawyer to assist you with your case as important deadlines govern the filing of these cases.
